Poll: Need For Flood Insurance Strong After Sandy

Hurricane Sandy hit the Northeast with a vengeance, bringing wind and rain damage. But it was the storm surge that caused the most death and destruction, filling thousands of homes and businesses with more than 10 feet of water.

Many of the victims will turn to their flood insurance to help rebuild their homes and their lives. Because some homeowners don’t have flood insurance, and homeowners’ insurance doesn’t cover floods, others will have no relief at all.

According to a poll of 400 Internet users conducted by THELAW.TV, 88.6 percent of those surveyed who don’t already have flood insurance on their homes are more likely to secure flood insurance in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

THELAW.TV, the largest website with video-based legal content, surveyed Americans on their attitude toward flood insurance, in light of the increased awareness of this important type of protection after a major storm like Sandy.

Among the respondents:

  • 82 percent didn’t already have flood insurance
  • 89 percent never had their home flooded
  • Only 73.5 percent knew that homeowners’ insurance policies don’t cover floods

“This data shows that homeowners can be moved to make a significant financial decision after watching one catastrophic event,” says Brian Albert, attorney and founder of legal information website THELAW.TV. “Even homeowners who don’t have flood insurance, and who don’t live in a flood zone, now think they need to buy this type of coverage.”

The THELAW.TV survey was conducted using a demographically balanced internet-based survey of 400 American adults and has a margin of error of plus-or-minus 4.9 percent.
